Letter from Student Trustees Narein Chenthivelnathan and Myah Robinson
The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) serves more than 64,000 students and cares about the well-being of each and every one.
As student trustees, we are proud to be a part of a school board that strives to create an inclusive atmosphere where all students are encouraged to share their voice.
Our role is to advocate for students through our seats at the board table and provide alternative opportunities for input, such as board advisory groups and community outreach. Additionally, we lead the board’s Student Senate. This board committee reaches every WRDSB secondary school and allows students to discuss significant issues that affect our student population. This year, our focus is equity and inclusion, substance use and abuse, environmental sustainability and infrastructure/facilities.
We are proud to have representation from each of the sixteen secondary schools on Student Senate and have had tremendous turnouts at our monthly meetings, with more than fifty students in attendance.
The 2019 school year was a year of learning and innovation. The WRDSB has continued to embrace changes that have come forward in the past year and have used these opportunities to find new ways to serve our student population further.
As representatives of the student body, we are proud of our WRDSB’s commitment to their students and their voices. This openness, in Board meetings, in committees and within schools, is a defining feature of WRDSB. We are thankful for the support we receive from senior staff and trustees, and for their dedication to student achievement and well-being.
We look forward to what 2020 has in store and continuing to focus on student voice within the WRDSB in the new decade.
