As student trustees and students in Waterloo Region District School Board, we are proud to be part of a school board that profoundly cares about the students they serve. Creating an inclusive student voice takes time and effort. People across the school district are making sure students receive the supports they need to succeed and can use their voice.
As student trustees, we advocate for students through our seats at the board table and other avenues for input, such as board committees and provincial symposiums. We also lead WRDSB’s Student Senate – a group that represents each secondary school and gives students the chance to discuss important topics affecting students. This year we’ve worked on issues including the mental health and wellbeing of our students, the state of our facilities and the abuse of substances by students. We have representation from all 16 secondary schools on our student senate. We are pleased student senators had the opportunity to contribute and use their voice as members of the Equity and Inclusion Committee and Fiscal Task Force.
Looking back, 2018, was a year of change for our board. New changes to the provincial education system and an election brought in new trustees and a provincial government. WRDSB has embraced this year of change with the best interests of students in mind.
As student trustees, we are grateful to have our school board open to hearing from all of our students, whether it be the board meetings, where we as student trustees use our voice, or the senior staff who were willing to share information at student senate meetings and listen to students. It is imperative that student voice continues to be heard and we look forward to continuing this in 2019.
